Largeup & Blackwell Rum presents
Sister Nancy & Friends

Featuring

Sister Nancy & Friends

Music by

Rice & Peas

Special guest

DJ Queen Majesty

Sister Nancy is low-key having the best year ever in 2017. The lady dancehall pioneer, whose biggest tunes were recorded back in 1982, hasn’t released any new music, but she’s felt kinda ubiquitous since getting sampled by Kanye West on last year’s “Famous.” Pitchfork Media recently celebrated “Bam Bam,” a song Nancy didn’t learn was a hit until a decade and a half later (it never was one in Jamaica, but took on a life of its own in the States and abroad), as the greatest dancehall song of all-time, while this write-up in The New Yorker touted its credentials in the preferred magazine of the intellectual elite. And she’s been killing stages from Miami to Jamaica.

Fresh off her recent appearances at Rebel Salute and at Winter Music Conference, LargeUp and Blackwell Rum present Sister Nancy, backed by a full live band, in her first-ever New York City headlining show, at Brooklyn Bowl, on Thursday, May 25th. Nancy will be performing a full set with a live band, joined by the Rice and Peas DJs (DJ Gravy, Max Glazer/Federation Sound, Micro Don and Orijahnal Vibez) and selectress Queen Majesty.

But the band doesn’t stop at Fridays on Bleecker Street – they are taking the COUNTRY by storm, playing legendary venues like The Capitol Theatre and The Paramount Theatre, and will soon make their Brooklyn debut at Brooklyn Bowl! Seriously, they are all that and a bag of chips!

Hsu-Nami and Notorious MSG rock Brooklyn Bowl!

Friday reminded me how much I really love Brooklyn Bowl.  Just down the street from our office, BK Bowl held court for two amazing bands (and Passport to Taiwan veterans), Hsu-Nami and Notorious MSG (think Asian Beastie Boys) for their record release show.  This was my first time seeing both of these amazing bands (although I had listened to their CD’s on repeat), and words could barely describe this event.  Hsu-Nami is comprised of six professionally trained musicians with front man Jack Hsu playing an erhu (traditional Chinese instrument) so passionately, I really thought they would over shadow Notorious MSG, but I was really wrong.  Notorious MSG has so many witty shenanigans and on stage antics from chugging soy sauce to smoking egg rolls, it is so hard not to have a smile on your face the whole time watching this amp’d up threesome (well, six-some if you include the live backup band they have that sport short shorts).  I apologize for the lack of photos of Notorious MSG, but when you have a hundred Asians pumping their fists, it’s really hard to get up close for photos.  Stay tuned for more updates on these awesome bands and I’ll see if I can get my hands on some tickets to give away for future shows.
