Metro Stylee Reunited for Apple Stomp at Iriving Plaza also featuring The Suicide Machines, The Pilfers, What’s Your Problem Brian,& more!

Ska was brought back to life this weekend at Irving Plaza with the Apple Stomp festival featuring over 15+ bands which included The Suicide Machines, Mephiskapheles, The Pilfers, What’s Your Problem Brian, and our personal favorite (for bias reasons) Metro Stylee.  For the first time in over 13 years, Metro Stylee hit the big stage with huge acts delivering a once in a life time reunion show which didn’t seem far from their 90’s performances.  I wasn’t able to attend the second night of performances, so I only have photos from Friday.  You can check them out with the link below to take you to the gallery and I also added a few of my personal favorite shots from the evening under that.  We want to thank Apple Stomp, Asbestos Records and Live Nation, Coolie Ranx, all the other amazing bands, and of course the Stylee’s and their fans for making this unforgettable night happen.  Also a huge shout out to Steve Pan and Otto’s Shrunken Head for hosting the Metro Stylee after party and a spontaneous last minute show.

Red Bull Music Academy 2013 takes over NYC with 38 Events!

Red Bull Music Academy is in town and kicks off on April 28.   We were lucky enough to be invited to the Redbull Academy last night for a kick off party for a taste of events to come this next month and we even got a tour of the whole place.  Theaters, recording studios, and aquariums — it was a creative playground and we couldn’t be more impressed.  Over the next month, RBMA is throwing 38 events in every cultural background to cater to anyone’s likes which include Eryka Badu, our friends from Fixed JDH & Dave P, a Brian Eno paintings exhibit, DFA 12 year anniversary party, NYC in Dub, and pretty much any other NYC party you can think of will be taken over by.  We’ve added 11 of their events to our SHAW Calendar, all of which have not been sold out yet. Check those out HERE!

For a complete line up of all the events, CLICK HERE!

And here is a word about the festival from RBMA:

“The Red Bull Music Academy is a world-travelling series of music workshops and festivals: a platform for those who make a difference in today’s musical landscape. This year we’re bringing together two groups of 31 selected participants – producers, vocalists, DJs, instrumentalists and all-round musical mavericks from around the world – in New York City. For two weeks, each group will hear lectures by musical luminaries, work together on tracks and perform in the city’s best clubs and music halls. Imagine a place that’s equal parts science lab, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and Kraftwerk’s home studio. Throw in a touch of Haight-Ashbury circa 1967, a sprinkle of Prince Jammy’s mixing board and Bob Moog’s synthesizer collection – all in a 22nd century remix – and you’re halfway there.

The Academy began back in 1998, and has been traversing the globe since: from Berlin to Cape Town, São Paulo, Barcelona, London, Toronto and many other places.

Interested? Applications for the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy open early next year. Watch this space for more information.”

Frankie Cook’s makes SHAW lunch

We had the absolute pleasure to be invited over to Frankie Cook’s studio in SoHo, NYC where he prepared us each our own personal Thai dish.  Frankie Cooks is one of the quirkiest, energetic chef’s I’ve ever met, including lots of music and characters in his cooking shows which seriously crack me up.  Not only did he cook us a delicious meal, but he gave us some cooking pointers and a tutorial of his dream cars (he’s quite the gear head).  Thank you so much for inviting us into your space and cooking us this very memorable meal, can’t wait to do it again! Check out the video below to see who Frankie Cook’s really is and you can stalk him on his Facebook here.

I met Merlin Bronques at Beauty Bar back in 2004 and we quickly became friends.   I’ve always admired his charm, style and vision with his success stemming from I don’t get to see Bronques very much these days as he is quite in demand, but it’s always good to see his work and get an idea of what he’s been up to. This is Bronques’s latest video project which is incredible. ~ Andy Shaw

S.S. Coachella feat. Pulp, Hot Chip, Simian Mobile Disco, Girl Talk, Sleigh Bells + more!

Wow, what a trip! First off we hope you all had a great holiday filled with loved ones, alcohol, and lots of gift…giving.  The best present this year to me was a trip on the S.S. Coachella sponsored by the incrediable Golden Voice who was so good to us.  Not only was this a cruise on the Celebrity cruise ships, but it was Coachella style with tons of great bands such as Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Simian Mobile Disco, Girl Talk, Sleigh Bells, The Black Lips, Cloud Nothings, Har Mar Super Star and too many more to mention.  We ran into so many friends and made so many more, the entire trip seems like a big blur — which we are still mentally AND physically recovering from (I have too many bruises to count!).  I would go into more detail but I’m hoping my lethargic photos say enough about our time on board and off, as I spent too much energy soaking it in and not enough capturing the moments.

PS: Jump!
