Andy Shaw
“Made in Taiwan, Raised in NYC and Perfected in Subculture”
Born in Taiwan, Andy Shaw moved to the United States at the age of 10 with little knowledge of English or American culture. He grew up in Queens, NY, and graduated from LaGuardia High School (of Fame fame) studying piano and the oboe, after which he attended the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY, and NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology as an Advertising and Communications major. During this period he played bass guitar for several New York City bands, including King Chango, Metro Stylee and INDK, which had a single featured on the HellCat Records compilation album “Give ‘Em the Boot Vol. 2.”
In August 2001, Andy sold all of his belongings and embarked on a cross-country motorcycle trip, ultimately landing in San Diego, CA. He secured a job with a major grassroots-style promotion company and quickly became its San Diego branch manager, working with record labels, brands, and major U.S. music festivals. Two years later, Andy once again sold all his belongings hit the open road, traveling on his Triumph motorcycle through Canada for three months before New York City beckoned him home. Using the knowledge and experience he had acquired on both sides of the industry—as an artist, and as a promoter—Shaw Promotion was born in the summer of 2003.
Back in his element, Andy quickly became a major figure in the city’s underground rock ‘n’ roll club scene and booked Shaw Promotion’s first client: a new electro/80s/new-wave party called “Trash,” which today is one of the most cutting-edge and longstanding events in New York. Building on that success, Andy soon had a full roster of clients ranging from fledgling bands to corporate entities.
Andy’s grassroots-style marketing expertise and reputation as a downtown tastemaker—coupled with his fierce work ethic and irresistible personality—are the heart and soul of Shaw Promotion, turning what was once a labor of love into a tremendously successful business with national reach. In his free time, Andy continues to be active as a bass player and has modeled for Ben Sherman, J. Crew, GQ, and Inked Magazine. He attends and supports many of the events he promotes, and can often be seen walking his two Boston Terriers or riding his Triumph or Vespa throughout New York City.
Amylu
A self-professed “mixed-up kid” who’s a blend of crazy Latina, stubborn German and passionate Sicilian wrapped up in fair Welsh skin, Amylu Meneses was born to be a promoter. By the tender age of 15, she was already a force to be reckoned with in her Connecticut hometown, where she frequently put together shows—doing everything from finding and renting the venues and booking the bands to designing the flyers. Upon moving to New York City at 18, she studied graphic design while becoming an integral part of the nightlife scene. While working as a rock ‘n’ roll go-go dancer at top clubs including SPA, Plaid and Pyramid, Amylu caught the eye of Andy Shaw, who quickly put her to work for Shaw Promotion promoting some of NYC’s top parties such as Rated X, Motherfucker and Tiswas.
After college, Amylu moved to Madrid for a year, studying Spanish and the local rock scene with equal fervor. Back in NYC, Amylu rejoined Shaw Promotion, managing its weekly email newsletter and producing other people’s events, all the while planning her own future parties. Amylu finally put her own unique twist on NYC’s music scene by launching the multilingual pop party “Le One Night Stand,” and later the Spanish-language indie dance party “Nacoteque,” which after four years is not only still going strong, but has toured the world with Amylu at the helm.
Now one of the top DJs in the country, Amylu has a knack for getting the promotional word out through the party grapevine instead of annoying spam. She also continues to inform and entertain downtown scenesters with her own blog (amylulita.blogspot.com). Look for Amylu wherever the action is—she’ll be spinning music or holding court at any party where art, culture and fashion converge.
